According to the announcement made by the South Korean President Moon Jae-in in a joint press conference with Kim Jong-un, North Korea has agreed to shut down their missile test sites with the presence of international experts to oversee the process. They are also willing to take action regarding their nuclear complex and shut it down under the premise that the United States will reciprocate with appropriate action.
During the three day summit which was held in Pyongyang, the two leaders also agreed on the opening of two railway lines between the two sides of the Korean Peninsula. One will be on the east side and the other will be on the left side of the peninsula. It will be a remarkable achievement considering the fact that the border between the two countries is one of the most militarized zones in the world. Kim Jon-un has also said that he will make it a point to visit Seoul, the capital of South Korea very soon. If he indeed does go through with this, it will make Kim Jon-un the first ever North Korean leader to visit the capital of South Korea.
Both North Korea and South Korea have also agreed on the need to turn the Korean Peninsula into a land that is peaceful and should not be a place full of nuclear threats. Moon has also said that the transportation links will require the approval of the United States led United Nations Command that has the responsibility of overseeing the affairs in that part of the world.
Kim Jong-un has said that there are definitely trials and challenges that will be expected on their road forward but they will be overcome. The more challenges that the two countries are able to overcome, the stronger the two will become and they are not afraid to take on the challenges that await them in the future. This agreement between the North and the South Koreas will definitely open up a lot of opportunities when it comes to improving relations between them. It is being considered a “leap forward” when it comes to achieving peace between the two countries according to Kim Jong-un.
Under the agreement signed by the two leaders, the North Korean facility, the Dongchang-ri missile engine testing facility shall see itself being closed down. North Korea has not yet defined the measures that it expects the US to take as reciprocation for shutting down their missile sites. It remains to be seen how this develops as we go forward.
